28 February 2016 - Happy Birthday Madeline!

Do you recognize this little one?

She hasn't always been obedient. I think I'd told her at least three times this night that she'd already had her bath and was ready for bed, but she wanted to get back in the bathtub just that badly.

She grew up a little though, and learned to make better decisions.

And now she's 12! And loves the color purple.

Darn yarn makes one very crafty.

And what tween doesn't love a new iPhone case?

Or a Minion hat and a birthday card with a little bit of money.

Singing Happy Birthday with tall candles on Poison cupcakes. It's called Poison, but....yum.

I little better close up of Poison.

On Saturday our bishop invited us to go skiing at Alta. Like me, he has three girls, although his are a little younger. Madeline had birthday plans, so only Jessica and Emily came.

The bishop's three daughters with two of mine. It was a bright, sun shiny day.

21 February 2016 - Welcome Home!

This week, my parents came home from their mission in Brisbane, Australia. Here we are, ready to welcome them home at the Salt Lake Airport.

Ready for hugs and cheers.

Happy reunion.

On Sunday, the girls were invited to the Provo City Center temple for a special tour for moms and daughters. Joanne took our three girls, plus Jasmine, one of the young women from our ward, and Bethany, a former young woman from our Pennsylvania ward who is now studying at UVU.

Saturday was Jessica's first school dance date. This is James, one of the young men from our stake.

Ready for a night out.

14 February 2016 - Valentine's Day

Madeline's class had an etiquette lunch for Valentine's Day. Joanne and I volunteered to go over and decorate for the lunch.

I'm not very creative so I just did what I was told, and I thought we did a nice job for the kids.

On the night before Valentine's Day, Joanne and I had a night skiing date to Sundance. Timp was beautiful in the setting sunlight. This is the best picture I got, though it doesn't really do it justice.

7 February 2016 - Swim and Temple

We got a little snow storm this week that didn't do a lot for the slopes but did make the mountains and trees beautiful.

On Saturday we had a swim meet in Provo. Baby Adrienne came to cheer the girls on.

Thursday was our turn to do the Provo City Center Temple open house. This is the Christus statue in the visitor's center.

We went late in the evening Thursday, so we only got night pictures of the temple.

31 January 2016 - Jackson Hole Ski Trip

This week Phil and I took a short trip to ski at Jackson Hole. Here is a view of the mountain from the parking lot.

Our first trip up the mountain was more than 4,000 vertical feet up the tram.

Packed inside the tram like sardines.

At the top, at nearly 10,500 feet, the wind was whipping icy cold and visibility was very low. We made our way down patiently, but spent most of the rest of the day skiing below 9,000 feet.

Cutting up a little snow.

On the way home from Jackson, we encountered two large herds of elk. The dark line across the middle of this photo is made up completely of elk. Click on it to zoom in. There were some spectacular elk in these herds.

The roads were snow packed through Wyoming on the drive back. The scenery was fabulous, so we didn't mind the low speeds heading home.

In Afton, WY, a new temple is under construction. This is the Star Valley temple. I'm guessing it should be finished later this year.

Star Valley is where my mom grew up. Her parents owned a ranch at the south end of the valley in Smoot. Although my grandparents eventually retired to Provo, Star Valley was always their home. When they died, we took them back to Smoot Cemetery for burial. This was as close as we could get to visiting their graves after heavy snows fell during our trip.

Here is the Lancaster home on the south side of Smoot. The house has been abandoned for many years -- as long as I can remember. But I always like to watch for it each time I visit Star Valley. This time, with deep snow blanketing the valley, it conjured visions of my grandpa hitching his sleigh team and driving through the drifts to check on his cows, or to fulfill one of the callings he held in the church over many years, including serving as bishop of the Smoot Ward and High Councilor in the Star Valley Stake.

As we continued on home, we took the road through Logan Canyon, a place I've loved since I lived in Logan during my freshman year of college. The canyon was beautiful, teeming with the freshly falling snow. Logan had received over a foot of new snow, and the temple stood out in sharp contrast to the blanket of white.

It was a brilliant, if short, trip into the mountains and back.

24 January 2016 - Busy Kids

This week over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the girls had a swim meet in Salt Lake. All three performed well and improved several best times.

On the holiday, with the girls out of school we headed up to Sundance. It was crowded and snowing a blizzard, so we skied hard for two hours and then called it a day.

This year, Madeline has been participating on her school's ballroom dance team. This week her team had a competition at Timpview High School. It was an eye-opening experience for the whole family. The place was rocking more than a rivalry basketball game. Madeline's team won a gold ribbon.

The girls made a variation on an old Christmas cookie favorite. These are marshmallow corn flake cookies, with no green food coloring and chocolate candies instead of red hots.

Emily had a spelling bee at school. That's her in the pink shirt. As you can see, she did well and outlasted many of her classmates, but didn't end up winning. Still, she did a great job.

17 January 2016 - Sundance Skiing

This week we went to Sundance to ski a couple of times. The first day was gloriously sunny.

Three of us with Mt. Timp in the background.

The second day of skiing this week was a powder day with Phil. The powder was between 18" and 30" deep depending on where you were on the mountain.

Sundance has been blessed with deep snow and gorgeous views all season long.
